U.S. Work-Related Injuries Take a Toll
Costs related to occupational health reach $250 billion annually, researcher says


Job-related injuries and illnesses in the United States cost the nation an estimated $250 billion per year, according to a new study.

The figure is much higher than generally assumed and is $31 billion more than the direct and indirect costs of all cancers, $76 billion more than the costs of diabetes, and $187 billion more than the costs of stroke, the researchers say.

Sleep problems are common among police officers and are associated with more health issues and poorer performance on the job, a new study shows.

Researchers screened almost 5,000 police officers from the United States and Canada online or in person and found that 40 percent of them had a sleep disorder.

Treating employees badly can backfire as productivity drops, researchers say


If you're unhappy at work, it may be because your psychological needs aren't being met by your manager or company, a new study suggests.

Over-controlling bosses who use threats to motivate workers and companies that don't seem to value employees' contributions frustrate people's basic needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness (how you relate to others), according to the researchers led by Dr. Nicolas Gillet at the Universite Francois Rabelais in Tours, France.
